Harriers end on a high

Croydon’s seniors brought the curtain down on their Southern Athletics League 2nd division campaign with a third place finish at Salisbury. Although short of sprinters, the Harriers enjoyed maximum points in the men’s 1500m, 5000m, 2000m steeplechase and the javelin. David White led the way with a double win in the A 1500m (4:24.5) and A 5000m (16:33.6), and was backed up with further wins from Mark Plackett (B 5000m, 17:00.22), Jaran Finn (B 1500m and A 2km chase) and Colin Oxlade (B 2km chase, 7:40.4). Robbie Powell also triumphed in the 800m in 2:00.7. On the field, Richmond Baah returned to action in style with a win in the javelin (45.89m). He was ably supported by Faraz Rafi who took the B-string honours (28.22m) who then took second in his preferred discus with a 35.50m effort. The pick of women’s performances came courtesy of Amy Dowsett (A 100m, 13.4secs), Louise Locke (A 3000m, 12:11.2), Jenny Beecroft (B 3000m, 12:43.7), Mandy Rowley-Jones (A high jump, 1.30m), Linda Harrison (A hammer, 15.32m), Kim Thornton (B 200m, 2nd) and Alice Campbell (12.53m, B discus). Other results: A 100m Clarence Riley 12.1secs, 3rd, PB. A 400m Scott Fanner 54.6secs, 2nd 5000m Eric Campbell 25:20.0 Pole Vault Andy Del Nevo 2.90m, PB B Discus James Eccles 27.04m, 2nd A Hammer Chris King 27.28m, 3rd The result means Croydon finish 11th out of 16 clubs in the 2nd division.
